War Diary
The War Diary of the 14th Canadian Infantry Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade shows that Private Stanley was actually killed while on a patrol into No-Man's Land on the night of March 12, 1915 - some 2 weeks prior to his official report of death. At the time, the 1st Canadian Division was in their first combat role, manning the trenches at Bois-Grenier, as part of the British 1st Army attack in the Battle of Neuve Chapelle. This time and this battle are seldom recorded in Canadian History and so it is important that the men that were lost there are properly recorded in truly the real "Baptism of Fire". -
