Son of Patrick and Catherine (née O'Donnell) Kelly, of Toronto, Ontario. He was the brother of Corporal Peter J. Kelly, 4th Battalion and Pte Tobias Kelly, Cyclist and Emmett Frederick, who also served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. In addition to those mentioned, Pte Kelly was also the brother of Thomas Joseph, Mary Ellen, Annie Rosetta, Martin, Katherine, Cecilia Veronica, Basil John and Francis Bertram and Stephen Gerard who died before reaching the age of one.
