Son of Henry and Julia Ann (Moses) Smart of Deseronto, Ontario.
Brother of George Smart who suffered a gunshot wound to the right wrist at the Battle of Amiens during service with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. He left for Canada on March 31, 1919, and was discharged on April 8, 1919, in Kingston Ontario. Despite being wounded he also volunteered for service during the Second World War.

A marble plaque at Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, RR 1 Deseronto, Deseronto, ON was erected by the local Mohawk community. His name as it is inscribed on the Vimy Memorial. Over 11,000 fallen Canadians having no known place of burial in France, are honoured on this Memorial. May they never be forgotten. (J. Stephens) -
