Only son of Fanny W. McEwen (formerly Steele), of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Charles H. Steele. Brother of Esther. In civilian life, Pte Steele was employed as a bookkeeper. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia onboard the S.S. Olympic on 1 April 1916 and disembarked at Liverpool, England on 11 April 1916.

This is a plaque his mother Fanny Williams Steele (nee Hughes) had which has stayed with our family all these years. -
Memorial
His name as it is inscribed on the Vimy Memorial. Over 11,000 fallen Canadians having no known place of burial in France, are honoured on this Memorial. May they never be forgotten. (J. Stephens)
