Burial/memorial information
Baptized Léopold Gaboriault. Son of Marie Renaud (deceased in 1900) and Joseph Gaboriault-dit-Lapalme, of Montague and Turners Falls, Massachusetts.
The family of nine children emigrated to Massachusetts in 1900 and the mother, then pregnant, died there shortly after arrival in childbirth. The father remarried in 1902 to Malvina Degrasse "Degaraffe / Desgaraffes", widow of Peter Menard "Miner". The Massachusetts records are so ambiguous and prone to error that it is not worthwhile to delve any further. The father, however, would have died between 1913 and 1920.
Enlisted in Company B of the 41st Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he sailed for Great Britain on October 15, 1915, and landed in Plymouth, England, on the 28th. On February 29, 1916, he was assigned to the 23rd Reserve Battalion, stationed at Shorncliffe. On April 16, he crossed the English Channel and landed in Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, France. He was transferred to the 22nd Battalion on the 16th. On May 6, he went to the front lines to take part in the fighting during the Battle of the Zillebeke Craters, not far from Ypres, Belgium. He was killed in action on the 11th during the Battle of Zillebeke-Mont-Sorrel. His body was never recovered.
