Son of William and Agnes Macdougal Smith Thorburn of Hearthstanes, Tweedsmuir, Broughton, Peebleshire, Scotland. Pte Thorburn enlisted in Ottawa on 26 August 1914. His death was reported in Edmonton Bulletin on 28 January 1915.
