Baptized Stanislas Chalifoux. Son of Adolphe « Delphis » Chalifoux and Mary-Adélaïde Labatt (deceased in 1904), of Victoria Harbour, Simcoe, Ontario. His father remarried to Angèle Hubert-Baker in early 1918 and then moved to Pakesley, Parry Sound, Ontario.
Stanislas and his brother Adolphe both changed their names when they enlisted: Stanislas enlisted as “Joseph-Denis Chalifoux” and Adolphe as “Joseph Jelifo”. Stanislas stated being born on 2 May 1895. The brothers were illiterate and their name was misspelled in official files.
In France, Stanislas was first taken on strength with the 22nd Battalion, from 28 August 1916 to 23 November 1917. He was the transferred to the Canadian Railway Troops and later to the Canadian Engineers.
