Son of François « Frank » Blanchette and Émilie Lefevre-Chartrand, of Huntingdon, Montérégie, Québec. He stated that he did not know his date of birth when he enlisted, so for his memorial page, the 1901 census is used.

Three months after his death, his brother George (service number 3155106) died while in combat, on 7 November 1918, at Élouges, near Mons, Belgium, with the 22nd Battalion.
