Baptized Joseph-Louis-Raymond Couillard. Son of Joseph Couillard (deceased in 1894) and Marie-Élisabeth Adam, of L’Islet, Québec. His mother never remarried and she died in L’Islet in 1929.

Enlisted in the 22nd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he arrived in Plymouth, England, on 29 May 1915 and in Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, France. The following 15 September. He was wounded in action on 19 May 1916 and evacuated to England on 27 June 1916. On 29 July, he was incorporated into the 69th Reserve Battalion and returned to France on 28 August, when he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion. From 18 to 20th September, he was on loan to the 2nd Canadian Entrenchment Battalion. On 1 October 1916, he was seriously wounded in action by shrapnel. He was evacuated to England on the 12th. From 3 March 1917 to the 14th, he was on loan to the 4th Labor Battalion at Seaford. He returned to France on the 15th and rejoined the 22nd Battalion on 25 November 1917. From 10 December 1917 to 12 February 1918, he was part of the Canadian Corps Reinforcement camp. On the 14th, he was back with his battalion. He was killed in action on 25 February 1918 in the Liévin-Lens trenches.

AIX-NOULETTE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION Pas de Calais, France

Aix-Noulette is a village in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais, about 13 kilometres south of Bethune on the main road to Arras. From Arras take the D937 towards Bethune. At Aix-Noulette, turn right at the church. The AIX-NOULETTE COMMUNAL CEMETERY and EXTENSION are a few hundred metres on the left side of the road to Bully-Grenay.
