Born at Harbour Grace, Newfoundland. Son of George and Mary Ann Gill, of Lisbon Falls, Maine, U.S.A. He was recuited on 1 May 1916 stating he was single and employed as a tanner. Embarked St John's, Newfoundland on 19 July 1916 and joined the 2nd Battalion on 17 January 1917. His headstone inscription reads... He died for His King and His Country.
