Baptized Joseph-Charles-Édouard Bourdeau. Son of Alfred Bourdeau (deceased in 1900) and Philomène Shanks (remarried to Joseph Brisebois in 1904).

Married to Florida Lachance in 1911, of Montréal, Québec.

Enlisted for the first time on 25 February 1915 with the 41st Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, regimental number 416443, he stated that he had been born on 10 September 1890. On 31 December 1915, he enlisted again with the 163rd Battalion, regimental number 660054, stating that he had been born on 10 September 1891. On an unknown date, he was sent to Bermuda until 18 November 1916, when he went to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Arriving in England on 6 December of the same year, he was posted to the 10th Reserve Battalion on 7 January 1917, then to the 150th Battalion on 26 February 1917. He was transferred to the 22nd Battalion on 20 April. On 30 May 1917, he was wounded in action in France. On 15 August 1917, he was gassed. From 28 October to 17 November 1917, he was posted to the Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp and returned to the 22nd Battalion. On 8 April 1918, he was gassed again in France. On 28 May, he returned to the front line. He was killed in action on 26 August 1918 at Beaurains near Arras, France.

Monchy-le-Preux is a village about 7 kilometres south-east of Arras and WINDMILL BRITISH CEMETERY lies to the south of the village on the north side of the main Arras-Cambrai road, the D939.
