In October 1917, the Richard de Larrinaga was en route on ballast from Manchester, England, to Galveston, Texas, when on the 8th she was torpedoed by the U-57 15 miles (24 km) south-east of Ballycotton Island, Ireland, in the Celtic Sea. Her crew of 35 sailors, including the captain, perished.
