On 13 December 1917, the sailing ship Little Gem was sailing from Oporto, Portugal, to Gautois, Newfoundland, when she was boarded by U-87 and sunk by explosive charges west of Casquets, Channel Islands, Newfoundland. Five crew members, including the captain, were killed.
