Baptized Joseph-Henri-Donatien Hamelin. Son of Alphonse Hamelin (deceased in 1913) and Delphine Durand, of Champlain. 

Husband of Adélina Lafleur, married in 1909, of Montréal, Québec. Childless and eventually separated, in 1939 In Montréal, she married Édouard Vianney Serre dit St-Jean, a soldier.

He enlisted using the name Joseph D. Hamelin and he stated being single, born in 1888.

Enlisted in the Canadian Cyclist Corps in Quebec City, he was assigned to the 258th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He sailed for Great Britain on October 6, 1917, and landed in England on the 17th. Upon his arrival, he was assigned to the 10th Reserve Battalion. He crossed over to France on March 28, 1918, and was transferred to the 22nd Battalion on the 29th. He went to the front lines on April 20, 1918. He was initially reported missing on August 9, 1918, during the Battle of Amiens on the Somme, near Méharicourt, and was later found dead.

CAIX BRITISH CEMETERY Somme, France

The village of Caix is situated about 28 kilometres south-east of Amiens, midway between the N29, Amiens to St. Quentin road, and the D934, Amiens to Roye road. The CAIX BRITISH CEMETERY is south of the village.

From the centre of the village on the main road, D28, in the direction of Beaucourt en Santerre, turn left at the D41 in the direction of Le Quesnel. About 200 metres along this road is the local communal cemetery and the first CWGC signpost will be found. Turn left just before the local cemetery and follow the side road where the CAIX BRITISH CEMETERY will be found on the right.
