Baptised Samuel-Alphonse Carroll. Son of Jean « alias John » Carroll and Basilisse « alias Lumina » Ruest, respectively from Fall River, Massachusetts and Ste-Angèle-de-Mérici, Matane, Quebec. He falsely declared being born in Montreal in 1899 when he enlisted.
Enlisted in the 2nd Depot of the 2nd Quebec Regiment in Montreal, Quebec, he arrived in England on 4 March 1918. Transferred on 11 July to the 22nd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he landed in France on the 24th and was killed in action on 28 August 1918 at the Battle of Chérisy.

WANCOURT BRITISH CEMETERY Pas de Calais, France
Wancourt is a village about 8 kilometres south-east of Arras. It is 2 kilometres south of the main road from Arras to Cambrai. The WANCOURT BRITISH CEMETERY is a short distance south-east of the village just off the D 35 road.
