On 27 February 1918, volunteering to lead a raid into enemy territory, he returned to the trenches at Lens, Pas-de-Calais, France, having successfully completed his mission. Noticing that two soldiers from the group were missing, he went back to find them and bring them back wounded, for which he was awarded the Military Medal. He was killed in action on 30 March 1918 east of Boisleux-Saint-Marc, at Mercatel, near Arras, Pas-de-Calais.
