Burial/memorial information
According to an old tradition, observed in some families, Eugène took his godfather’s name (i.e. Pierre Girard) after Pierre died in 1912 ; which explains why he enrolled as Pierre Couillard.
Enlisted in the 22nd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, he arrived in Plymouth, England, on 29 May 1915 and Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, France, on 15 September. He was wounded in action on 1 March 1916. On 10 September of the same year, he was loaned to the 2nd Division Signals Company until 4 June 1918. He was killed in action on 13 June 1918.
His Battalion was in brigade support South-East of Agny and sent on fatigue duty to improve the trenches of Telegraph Hill Switch, near Neuville-Vitasse. Pierre-Eugène was killed by a heavy shell while on fatigue duty.
