Son of Colin and Jessie (née Storrie) McGillivray, of Paisley, Ontario. Brother of Catherine McDougal, Christine Campbell and Esther
McGillivray. Private McGillivray was raised on the 12th Concession, Bruce Township, Bruce County, Ontario.
In his obituary, he was described as "a sturdy young man, well spoken of by his neighbours and friends in Bruce Township". Private McGillivray later moved to Alberta where he had a homestead near Lloydminister, Alberta. He served two years with the 22nd Saskatoon Light Horse. He enlisted with the 9th Canadian Machine Regiment, stating he was a farmer and single. He was later transferred to the Fort Garry Horse.

STE. MARIE CEMETERY Seine-Maritime, France
Le Havre is an important town and port on the north side of the estuary of the River Seine. STE. MARIE CEMETERY is one of the town cemeteries, but it is actually situated in the commune of Graville-St. Honorine. It stands on the ridge overlooking Le Havre from the north and is north of the N.182.
