Son of John Dutton and Mary Elizabeth Witherington, of Liscard, Cheshire, England. John served with the Royal Navy in territorial waters from April 16, 1909 to July 15, 1915 then in the Mediterranean from July 16, 1915 to April 29, 1916 with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force and again in territorial waters from April 30, 1916 to May 4, 1916. He was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
She was on route from Liverpool, England, to Quebec City and Montreal, Quebec, when on September 9, 1918, she was torpedoed by UB-87 52 miles (84 km) off Daunt's Rock, Cork, Ireland. She sank with 45 of her crew, position 58°11'N/07°25'W.
