On 15 April 1918, the Lake Michigan was en route from Liverpool, England, to Saint John, New Brunswick, via the Clyde, with convoy OB-61, when she was torpedoed by U-100, and sunk 93 miles (150 km) north-west of Eagle Island, Ireland, position 55°30'N/11°52'W. The captain and McGowan lost their lives.
