Burial/memorial information
Son of François Hamel (deceased in 1899) and Hermine Archambault (deceased in 1902) of Frenchtown, Missoula, Montana. Husband of Rosa Léonard, of Montréal, Québec, and father of four children in the 1911 census.
Enlisted in the 41st Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he sailed for Great Britain on October 16, 1915, and landed in Plymouth, England, on the 28th. On February 29, 1916, he was temporarily assigned to the 23rd Reserve Battalion. On April 16, he crossed over to France and landed in Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, that same day. Upon his arrival, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion, and on May 6, he found himself on the front lines. He took part in the Battle of the Zillebeke Craters, not far from Ypres, Belgium, and later in the Battle of the Somme.
Severely wounded to the head on 18 September 1916 during the Battle of Courcelette, he was evacuated to England where he died at 2nd Northern General Hospital, Beckett’s Park, Leeds.
