Baptized Joseph-Arthur-Lorenzo Hamel. Son of Joseph Hamel and Léda Bégin, of Adams, Massachusetts. Husband of Thérèsa Moreau, of St-Jean, Québec. Father of Joseph Laurent Joffre Hamel. He stated being born in 1889 when he enlisted. He served under the name Laurent Hamel.
Enlisted in the 41st Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he sailed for Great Britain on October 16, 1915, and landed in Plymouth, England, on the 28th. On March 15, 1916, he was temporarily assigned to the 23rd Reserve Battalion. On April 15, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion, and on the 16th, he crossed the English Channel to land at Boulogne, Pas-de-Calais, France. He took part in the fighting in the Zillebeke craters, not far from Ypres, Belgium, as well as in the Battle of the Somme on July 1, 1916.
He was wounded to the head and chest in the trenches of Vierstraat and he died of his wounds at a forward post of No. 3 Casualty clearing station.
