The birth year inscribed in his Attestation paper is 1888, which is wrong by five years, but correctly inscribed 1883 elsewhere in his military file.
Enlisted in the 41st Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, he arrived in Plymouth, England on 28 October 1915. Transferred to the 22nd Battalion on 29 June 1916, he set foot in France on 13 July and fought in Belgium, where he was killed in action.

ELZENWALLE BRASSERIE CEMETERY is located 5 Km south west of Ieper town centre, on the Kemmelseweg, a road connecting Ieper to Kemmel (N331).
From Ieper town centre the Kemmelseweg is reached via the Rijselsestraat, through the Lille Gate (Rijselpoort), and straight on towards Armentieres (N365). 900 m after the crossroads is the right hand turning onto the Kemmelseweg. (Made prominent by a railway level crossing).
The ELZENWALLE BRASSERIE CEMETERY lies 4 Km along the Kemmelseweg on the right hand side of the road.
