Burial/memorial information
Son of Eustache Lavigne and Amanda Leblanc (deceased in 1910), of Fannystelle, Manitoba. When he enlisted, he stated being born in Michigan, but there is no indication if it’s the city of Michigan (Indiana) or the State of Michigan.
Drafted under the Compulsory Military Service Act of 1917, he reported to the recruitment center in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on January 29, 1918, notice number 989375 JC. He was enlisted on March 21, 1918, in the 5th Draft, 1st Battalion, Manitoba Regiment, of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He sailed for Great Britain on April 17 and arrived in Liverpool, England, on the 28th. On September 5, he was assigned to the 43rd Battalion and crossed over to France on the 6th, joining the unit on the 9th. On the 11th, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion, which was rebuilding its ranks after the bloody Battle of Chérisy. He was killed in action on November 7, 1918, in Élouges, Hainaut, Belgium, during the final offensive of World War I.
