Additional information
Baptized Joseph-Dominique-Gaston Brière. Son of Édouard Brière and Catherine Beausoleil (deceased in 1890). His father remarried twice: to Élisa Gariépy in 1891 and to Antoinette Chatel in 1901, and he always lived in Terrebonne.

Gaston enlisted twice. He first joined an Anglophone unit in Ontario on 10 March 1916 (service number 788891) and six months later, he decided to join a Francophone unit in Québec, deserting from his unit to re-enlist.

He stated being born on 11 February 1889 the first time he enlisted, and on 11 February 1886 the second time he enlisted.

First enrolled on 10 March 1916, regimental number 788891, with the 130th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he deserted on 1 September. On the 22nd, he was discharged from the army. On 15 September 1916, he re-enlisted with the 167th Battalion, regimental number 672756, 1st Reinforcement Contingent. Arriving in England on 6 December, he was posted to the 10th Reserve Battalion on 7 January 1917, then to the 150th Battalion on 26 February. Transferred to the 22nd Battalion on 27 February 1918, he landed in France on the 28th. On 14 March, he went to the front line and was killed in action on 27 August 1918 during the Battle of Chérisy.
