Baptized Joseph-Marie-Albert Charland. Son of Joseph Charland (deceased in 1906) and Mathilde Anctil dit St-Jean, of Québec (St-Jean-Baptiste), Québec.
He previously served with the 9th Regiment - Les Voltigeurs de Québec - in Quebec City, Quebec. Enlisting with the 167th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, he was posted to the 189th Battalion on 8 September 1916. Arriving in Liverpool, England, on 6 October, he was first transferred to the 69th Battalion on the day of his arrival, to the 10th Reserve Battalion on 4 January 1917, and to the 22nd Battalion on 20 April 1917. Arriving in Le Havre, Normandy, France, on the 21st, he was killed in action on 19 July 1917 during the Battle of Lens, on Hill 70, near Cité Saint-Laurent.

Loos (Loos-en-Gohelle) is a village to the north of the road from Lens to Bethune. From Lens, take the N43 towards Bethune. Arriving at Loos, turn right at CWGC sign post. The LOOS BRITISH CEMETERY is about 1 kilometre from Loos Church in the southern part of the village.
