Baptized Joseph-Ignace-Hervé Clermont. Son of Jean-Baptiste Clermont (deceased in 1910) and Émilie Tougas, of Montréal, Québec. His mother died the following year and his sister Bella, wife of Arthur Nantel, then became Hervé’s known next of kin.

Enlisted in the 69th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he arrived in Liverpool, England, on 27 April 1916. Transferred to the 22nd Battalion on 27 September, he landed in France on the 28th. He went to the front on 16 October 1916 and was killed in action on 6 July 1917 at Liévin during the Battle of Lens.

Loos (Loos-en-Gohelle) is a village to the north of the road from Lens to Bethune. From Lens, take the N43 towards Bethune. Arriving at Loos, turn right at CWGC sign post. The LOOS BRITISH CEMETERY is about 1 kilometre from Loos Church in the southern part of the village.
