Son of Cléophas Hamel (deceased in 1911) and Delvina Lachance (deceased in 1902), of Sherbrooke, Québec.
He stated being born in Ste-Agathe when he enlisted.
Enlisted in the 163rd Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he departed on May 26, 1916, for Bermuda, where he remained until November 18, 1916, before arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the 26th and departing again on the 27th for Great Britain, where he arrived on December 6 in Liverpool, England. Assigned to the 10th Reserve Battalion on January 7, 1917, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion on March 28, 1918. On the 29th, he crossed over to France. He went to the front lines on June 17 and was killed in action during the Battle of Chérisy on August 16, 1918.

Sherbrooke Monument
Cover of the original program distributed at the unveiling of the Sherbrooke WWI memorial on November 7th, 1926, and two images of the monument. The monument was designed by Mr. G. W. Hill of Montreal, Quebec with bronze figures cast in Belgium and granite from the Stanstead district. The bronze Memorial tablet lists 249 names. -
