CSM William Fitzgerald, DCM was killed in France while serving with the 42nd Battalion (Royal Highlanders of Canada), Canadian Expeditionary Force. Here is an excerpt from the War Diary of the 42nd Battalion for the period in which CSM Fitzgerald was killed. All of the 42nd's fatal casualties during this period were apparently caused by enemy shell fire. -
