Son of Captain Samuel Furneaux and Eliza Ann Spracklin of St. John's, Newfoundland. Samuel was the captain of the brigantine SV Energy which disappeared in the North Atlantic after setting sail on 25 September 1905 from Oporto, Portugal, on her way back to St. John's.
On 15 January 1918, the SV Ethel left St. John's, Newfoundland, bound for Seville, Spain. The ship was reported missing with her crew of 6 sailors. They were never seen again.
