Son of George Hancock and Elizabeth Heines of St. John's, Newfoundland). Eli married in the 1st marriage Mary Miller of Trinity, Newfoundland, and in the 2nd marriage Mary Jane Head of St. John's, from whom he had a son, Allan Eli Hancock.

On 27 March 1918, after leaving the port of Santa Polo, Spain, this sailing ship was attacked, boarded and scuttled by a German U-boat team from U-155 and sunk 450 miles (724 km) northwest of Lisbon, Portugal, position 38°54'N/18°24'W. Five sailors lost their lives.
