Son of James Cook and Mary McKenzie (deceased in 1904), of Tron Place, Largs, Ayrshire, Scotland.

He was part of a group of 19 Anglophones sent by mistake as reinforcements to the 22nd Battalion, a Francophone unit. One month later, they had all been transferred to the 24th Battalion, except two of them.
