Wartime diary
Private Nelson Fortier was the first man of the 13th Canadian Infantry Battalion to be killed in action after the move to Belgium for the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) in October 1917. Matching his date of death to the war diary tells us that he was the man that was killed by a bomb dropped from an enemy aeroplane while doing road work near Spree Farm (Trench Map 28.c.18.c), just south of St. Julien. -
