The Invictus Games

The Invictus Games are an international sporting event for military members or Veterans who are ill or injured. The Games are an opportunity to use the power of sport to inspire recovery, support an individual’s rehabilitation, and to generate a deeper appreciation and respect for all those who serve or have served their country.

History

The Invictus Games have been held in several countries since the inaugural event in London, in 2014. Team Canada – comprised of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and Veterans – has competed at every Invictus Games.

To date, the Invictus Games have taken place in:

  • 2025 – Canada (Vancouver/Whistler)
  • 2023 – Germany (Dusseldorf)
  • 2022 – The Netherlands (The Hague)
  • 2018 – Australia (Sydney)
  • 2017 – Canada (Toronto)
  • 2016 – United States (Orlando)
  • 2014 – United Kingdom (London)

Inspiration

Returning from deployment in Afghanistan, Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, watched as the coffin of a Danish Soldier was loaded aboard for repatriation, alongside three injured British soldiers. That moment had a profound impact on him and, following a visit to the US Warrior Games in 2013, he was inspired to create the international Invictus Games to celebrate the unconquered human spirit, and shine a spotlight on the men and women who have served.

The Invictus Games Foundation offers a recovery pathway for wounded, injured and sick service men and women. The games provide opportunities for post-traumatic growth: enabling those involved to reclaim their purpose, identity and future, beyond injury.

Soldier On

The Soldier On program manages Team Canada’s participation in the Invictus Games and also for the Warrior Games.

Soldier On is a program of the Canadian Armed Forces Transition Group that contributes to the recovery of ill and injured CAF members and Veterans by providing opportunities and resources through sport, recreational, and creative activities.

Since 2007, Soldier On has supported over 12,000 ill and injured members using sport and physical recreational activities to enable social support, build confidence in their abilities, and realize their full potential. This re-introduction to an active lifestyle provides opportunities to develop new skills, build confidence, and meet peers with similar challenges.
