Darlingford Memorial Park includes a park and a brick building containing plaques and photographs. Ferris Bolton donated the land for a memorial park, which was dedicated on July 5, 1921. The site was deliberately located near the school (now a museum) so that the memorial would remain an ever-present reminder to generations of students. Bolton wanted children and adults to remember the sacrifices of those who had gone before. Three of his sons – Bert, 22 years old; Harry, 20; and Elmer, 18 enlisted in 1915 and went over to France and into the firing line the following year. They remain with those who sleep in Flanders’ Fields.

The red brick building with a sharp-gabled roof, the only free-standing war memorial of its type in Western Canada, was designed by Arthur A. Stoughton, the first Dean of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. Stone steps lead to a heavily studded door. Inside the brick building is a black granite honour roll of over 200 names in gold lettering of men and women from the area who served in the World Wars. Around the walls are relics of the war: German helmets, a gas mask, parts of trench mortars and machine guns, a trench periscope, photographs of local boys who served, and other objects of interest. The display of wartime artefacts and memorabilia was assembled by Bob Jordan, a Veteran of the Second World War.

The landscaping was designed and maintained by Dr. W.R. Leslie and staff at the Morden Experimental Farm. In white stones across the front of this small park that overlooks vast expanses of rolling farmland are the words of remembrance: Lest We Forget.

Surveyor Barry Veals was born here in 1937 and served as a youngster in the Salvage Corps during the war. He remembers decorating his bicycle to celebrate V-E Day and the safe return by train of his teacher’s husband from prison camp in Germany. His maternal grandfather was custodian of the nearby school plus the memorial grounds for nice years. During that time, he planted the original fir trees at the school, memorial park and the local cemetery, many of which stand today. The iron fence and brick posts across the entire front of the property have likely existed since 1921. The same goes for the cement tablets on the boulevard in which white raised stones spell out “Lest We Forget”.

Veterans Park was created in 1930. During 2019 - 2020, a new fence was constructed on the north side of the park to serve as a frame for a number of new plaques that were designed and created by Heather Imrie. The plaques contain information about wars and peacekeeping missions that the Canadian Forces have participated in since the Boer War to present day.

For years, this property was used as a docking site by the Detroit-Windsor Ferry Company and several businesses. In the late 1950s, these buildings were purchased and demolished by the City of Windsor so that the site could be developed into a major riverfront park. This park was to share the memories of those men and women who participated in various military engagements.

Dieppe Gardens was officially dedicated June 28, 1959, named after Dieppe, France, where the Essex Scottish Regiment of Windsor, along with other units of the 2nd Canadian Division, made an assault landing on August 19, 1942. Almost 5,000 troops, joined by members of the British and American forces, took part in the Dieppe Raid. The results were grim and more than 3,350 soldiers would be killed, wounded or taken prisoner that day. This park honours of all the men who served in this engagement and those from this area who served in Canada’s Armed Forces in the Second World War.

Lieutenant Colonel F. K. Jasperson, DSO, ED, QC, the commanding officer of the Essex Scottish Regiment of Windsor during the Dieppe Raid, unveiled the Service Personnel Monument. Three Army padres who took part in the commemoration ceremonies in Dieppe, France, during the Second World War officiated the service — Captain J.W. Houston, former chaplain of 2nd Division, Royal Canadian Artillery; Major F.C. McRitchie, former chaplain of 2nd Division Royal Canadian Engineers and current chaplain of Essex and Kent Scottish Regiment; and Major M.J. Dalton, MBE, former chaplain of the Essex Scottish Regiment.

As a further tribute to the Windsor area men who served and died, a plane flew over the area at the end of the ceremony and dropped poppies.

When Dieppe Gardens was dedicated, a Service Personnel Monument featuring a Silver Cross was placed by mothers whose sons were killed in the Second World War. Dieppe Gardens is home to many other military monuments: Pray for Peace, Naval Monument, WO1 Pipe Major J. (Jock) Copland MBE Memorial, Eternal Flame, Royal Canadian Air Force Memorial, Red Beach Memorial, and Korea Veterans War Memorial.

In 1927, the Drayton Women’s Institute, led by then-president Isabel (Peggy) Henderson, took matters into their own hands to construct a soldiers' memorial for the Townships of Maryborough and Peel. They took the lead in planning, funding, and realizing Drayton’s Memorial Park, timed to coincide with the Old Boys’ and Girls’ Reunion that was to take place over three days in July. Land for the park was donated by shopkeeper O. B. Henry, who was also Secretary for the Reunion Committee.

Clifford’s Memorial Park was purchased by the Village of Clifford in 1909 and was known as Central Park before it was repurposed and renamed in 1921. A park was chosen because the village wanted a memorial that would also serve as a gathering place for its residents to enjoy. William Hood, father of fallen soldier Private William Allan Hood, brought his team of Percheron horses to the site to level the ground.

The creation of Memorial Park and the Clifford Cenotaph was led by the Village Council and funded by an addition to the year’s property tax rate.
