This shaft is made from stone originally used in the cenotaph erected at Acadia School in 1980, dismantled in 1996 and rebuilt at this location in 1997. A lion sculpted in stone sits atop the cairn.

A Memorial Hospital opened in 1948 to honour the men and women of the local area who served and who died in both World Wars. The name was transferred to the new hospital built in 1976, however, the word "war" was deleted. The original hospital is now a long term care facility called "The Birches".
