PERCIVAL MOLSON
BORN 17 AUG 1880
KILLED IN ACTION 5 JULY 1917
ATHLETE • BENEFACTOR • HERO

[scroll/parchemin]

He whom this scroll commemorates
was numbered among those who,
at the call of King and Country, left all
that was dear to them, endured hardness,
faced danger, and finally passed out of
the sight of men by the path of duty
and self-sacrifice, giving up their own
lives that other’s might live in freedom.
Let those who come after see to it
that his name be not forgotten.

Capt. Percival Molson, M.C.

Construction was completed in 1914 on what was then known as McGill Graduates stadium. The stadium sat dormant through the First World War with the ending of football from 1914 to 1918. On 5 July 1917, Captain Percival Molson, a McGill University alumnus and sports star who had been instrumental in getting the stadium plan approved, was killed in action in France. His will left $75,000 to the university to help pay for the completion of the stadium. Designed by Percy Erskine Nobbs, the stadium was officially renamed in honour of Molson on 25 October 1919.

Born in 1880, Percival Molson soon became a gifted athlete and by the age of sixteen, he had participated in several sports and as an ice hockey player, was a member of the Montréal Victorias that won the 1897 Stanley Cup championship. In track and field he competed in several events including the long jump in which he set a world record at the American Athletics Meet in 1900 and went on to participate in the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri.

After an outstanding sports career with McGill University, Molson joined its administration. With the onset of the First World War, he was instrumental in establishing the University (infantry) Companies at McGill and other Canadian campuses to reinforce the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. Captain Molson joined the Patricia’s in the field in October 1915. In June 1916, he was badly wounded in the Battle of Mont Sorrel at Sanctuary Wood near Hoge, Belgium. He received the Military Cross for his valour. After recovering from his wounds, he returned to the front lines and on 5 July 1917, on the outskirts of Avion, Pas-de-Calais near Vimy Ridge, Captain Percival Molson was killed by a direct hit from a German howitzer.

The allegorical figure of Victory is emblematic not of death, but of victory. She stands with her arms folded over a sword covered with palms. The figure is nine feet high, sculptured in white Serezza marble and stands upon a pedestal of Botticinio marble eight feet high. The base of the pedestal is decorated on all four sides with fasces in very low relief, with festoons of laurel hanging between them. Victory stands with her arms folded over a sword covered with palms which with the draperies, corselet and helmet are brought into an impressive unity. The figure has countenance of steadfast serenity, warmed by a touch of human sympathy that in a subtle way conveys the idea of triumph though suffering and sacrifice. The noted American sculptor James Earle Fraser was inspired by the entrance hall of the bank with its majestic columns of dark granite. It was unveiled on December 3, 1923.

When the Bank of Montreal decided to erect a memorial to the 230 members of its staff who had fallen in the Great War, it arranged an international design competition. The winner, James Earle Fraser, submitted two designs, both of which were accepted. One was of the Soldiers' Memorial, that stands guard in front of the Manitoba Métis Federation (formerly Bank of Montreal Winnipeg Main Office).

The First World War Tablet and Second World War Tablet are located on the east wall of the atrium. The Molsons Bank First World War Roll of Honour and The Merchant Bank of Canada Honour Roll are located on the south wall of the banking hall, just beyond the atrium.

Unveiled in 1921, a stained glass window hangs above the altar at the Church of St. Andrews and St. Paul. The window honours Lt.-Col. Barlett McLellan and officers of the 42nd Battalion, Royal Highlanders of Canada, which was formed in Montreal.

McLellan died at the age of 49 on Aug. 3, 1918. The inscription reads: "In proud remembrance of Lt-Col Bartlett McLellan D.S.O. Officers & Men of the 42nd BN, R H C. They sought the glory of their country. They see the glory of God."

The stained glass window is just one of the many tributes to the bravery of soldiers during the war within the church.
