LA CATHÉDRALE ÉPISCOPALE
DE LA SAINTE-TRINITÉ
CATHEDRAL OF THE HOLY TRINITY

Built between 1800 and 1804, this refined example of Palladian
architecture heralded the introduction of British classicism
to Québec City. Designed by Major William Robe and Captain
William Hall of the Royal Artillery, the Anglican cathedral
was adapted from St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London, and features
a rectangular plan and tripartite nave with lateral galleries.
Decorative elements inspired by the works of Italian architect
Andrea Palladio include the pediment, arcade and lonic
pilasters. Seen as innovations in the period, these features
strongly influenced subsequent architecture in the city.

SAMUEL JOHANNES HOLLAND
(1728 - 1801)

Samuel Holland’s meticulous survey work shaped the settlement
patterns of large regions of Canada. Born in the Netherlands, he
undertook strategic surveys for the British military in North
America during the Seven Years War. He was appointed surveyor
general of northeastern North America in 1764 and member of the
Legislative Council of Quebec in 1779. For more than two decades,
Holland directed survey parties and mapped land for settlement
from Prince Edward Island to the Detroit River. His high standards
contributed greatly in the development of surveying and
cartography in Canada.

The Canadian Pacific Railway Great War Tablet at the Du Palais CPR Station was dedicated on April 28, 1922.

To honour those who served and gave their lives during the Great War, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) erected a series of bronze memorial tablets in over twenty select locations along their railway system and offices in Canada, United States, England and China. The tablet depicts Britannia, the national personification of Britain, as a helmeted female warrior with a lion to her right and a shield at her feet, HMS Lion (Admiral Beatty's flagship during the Battle of Jutland) with airplanes above and a tank in front, Canadian Pacific Steamship RMS Empress of Russia (used during the war as an armed merchant cruiser and transport ship), Canadian troops, and a CPR locomotive in a nod to all those who travelled by train across Canada before heading overseas. The plaque was designed by Archibald Pearce, Chief Engineer's Department, Montreal, with its model and casting by the Bromsgrove Guild at Worcester, England.
