MANEGE MILITAIRE VOLTIGEURS DE QUÉBEC

Le 9 mai 1998, à l’occasion de son accueil comme membre
honoraire du régiment les Voltigeurs de Québec,
le Très Honorable Jean Chrétien, CP, CR, BA, LL.L, LL.D,
Premier ministre du Canada, a fait l’annonce que cet édifice
construit entre 1885 et 1888 par le gouvernement du Canada
pour le régiment Les Voltigeurs de Québec, sera désigné
désormais Manège Militaire Voltigeurs de Québec.

Cette plaque commémorative a été dévoilée le 8 mai 1999, à l’occasion des
Fêtes régimentaires, par le colonel Marcel Jobin, CM CQ, CCSS, CD,
colonel honoraire du Régiment, le lieutenant-colonel André Desmarais,
lieutenant-colonel honoraire du Régiment et par le lieutenant-colonel
Simon Hébert, CD, commandant du Régiment.


On the 9th of May, 1998, the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien,
CP, CR, BA, LL.L. LL.D, Prime Minister of Canada was recognized
as an Honorary member of the Regiment Les Voltigeurs de Québec.
He proclaimed this building, which was built between
1885 and 1888 by the Canadian Government for the Regiment,
to be Manège Militaire Voltigeurs de Québec from this day on.

This commemorative plaque was unveiled on the 8th of May 1999 at the
celebration days of the Regiment by Colonel Marcel Jobin, CM, CQ, CCSS, CD,
Honorary Colonel of the Regiment, Lieutenant-Colonel Andre Desmarais,
Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of the Regiment and by Lieutenant-Colonel
Simon Hébert, CD, Commanding Officer of the Regiment.

GEORGES-PHILIAS VANIER

Gouverneur général de 1959 à 1967, le général Vanier eut une carrière militaire et diplomatique remarquable. Officier fondateur du Royal 22e Régiment, il servit dans ses rangs durant la Première Guerre mondiale et en fut le commandant de 1925 à 1928. Il représenta le Canada comme attaché militaire à la Société des Nations, comme secrétaire du haut-commissariat à Londres et comme ministre en France. En 1944, il devint le premier ambassadeur du Canada en France. Très estimé de ses soldats et de ses compatriotes, il s’employa, à titre de premier gouverneur général canadien- français depuis la Confédération, à promouvoir l’unité nationale.

Governor General from 1959 to 1967, Vanier had a distinguished military and diplomatic career. A founder of the Royal 22nd Regiment, he served with it in the First World War and was its commanding officer from 1925 to 1928. General Vanier represented Canada as Military Attaché to the League of Nations, Secretary to the Canadian High Commission in London, and Minister to France. In 1944 he became Canada’s first Ambassador to France. He was highly esteemed by his troops and countrymen, and as the first French-Canadian Governor General since Confederation, dedicated himself to promoting national unity.
