En souvenir de l’arrivée à Arvida de la 14e Batterie antiaérienne de l’Artillerie royale du Canada le 12 juin 1941

Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la production d’aluminium à Arvida a joué un rôle déterminant pour la victoire des Alliés. Fournissant jusqu’à 90 % de l’aluminium requis pour la fabrication des avions du Commonwealth, l’usine Arvida était à l’époque la plus importante aluminerie au monde, devenant par le fait même le site ayant la plus haute défense militaire au Canada. Ce sont 12 000 ouvriers qui se sont consacrés à la fabrication de l’équivalent de 20 % du total de la production mondiale, et 3 000 militaires qui étaient chargés de la protéger. Ce canon antiaérien, inscrit comme monument commémoratif militaire aux Anciens Combattants Canada, souligne l’importance de cet événement historique.

En souvenir du dévouement de ces milliers d’hommes et de femmes qui ont rendu possible cet effort de guerre à Arvida, et par le fait même cette défense des valeurs de liberté, de démocratie et de paix.

In Commemoration of the Arrival of the 14th Anti-Aircraft Battery of the Royal Canadian Artillery at Arvida, on June 12, 1941

During World War II, aluminum production at Arvida was instrumental in the Allied victory. Supplying up to 90 per cent of the aluminum for the construction of the Commonwealth aircraft, the Arvida plant was at the time the largest aluminum smelter in the world, thereby obtaining the largest military defence in Canada. 12,000 workers were involved in manufacturing the equivalent of 20 per cent of the world’s total production, and 3,000 servicemen were responsible for protecting it. This anti-aircraft cannon, registered as a military memorial to Veterans Affairs Canada, underlines the importance of this historic event.

In remembrance of the dedication of the thousands of men and women who made this war effort in Arvida possible, and thereby the defence of the values of freedom, democracy and peace.

Arvida National Historic Site of Canada is recognized in particular for its important role in the Second World War. The Arvida plant supplied up to 90% of the aluminum used by Allied countries for the construction of fighter jets. Aluminum production was then defended by soldiers and anti-aircraft batteries. This M1A1 90mm anti-aircraft gun was acquired by the City of Saguenay from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 209 Arvida to be exhibited in public space to commemorate this historic event.
