Air force history was made on 6 August 2003 when 15 Wing Moose Jaw became the first active airbase in Canada to be dedicated to the memory of Air Vice-Marshal Clifford Mackay "Black Mike" McEwen, a Moose Jaw native whose service to our nation as a member of the air force spanned both world wars and was one of the founding members of Canada's air force, during a special ceremony held on the 35th anniversary of his death. Air Vice-Marshal McEwen's three daughters, accompanied by Colonel Alain Boyer, Commanding Officer of CFB Moose Jaw, unveiled a ceremonial wall at the main gate inscribed with the name of their father. Numerous veterans, personnel from the Wing, local and provincial dignitaries, as well as members of the general public attended the dedication ceremony. The ceremony was part of 15 Wing's "Saskatchewan Remembers" program. Headed by Master Corporal Jeff Noel, the 15 Wing Heritage Officer, the program was implemented to preserve for current and future generations the major contributions made by Saskatchewan airmen and airwomen to the creation and perpetuation of Canada's air force.

This memorial is dedicated to Robert Sinton, who drove a supply wagon with General Middleton’s forces during the Riel uprising. Sinton’s connection with Riel was much more personal. After Riel’s execution, his body was placed in St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Cornwall St., and guarded day and night by members of the Bonneau family. Several week later, the Bonneaus were advised that a boxcar would be placed near Albert Street in which the remains would be taken to St. Boniface for burial. In the dead of night, Robert Sinton was called on to help move the casket, a secret he kept for 50 years.
