ATTESTATION PAPER

The Penny was delivered in the folder (above)
And included the letter from His Majesty the King

[right/droit]

In Memory of
Private Robert Roy McKibben
781446, "C" Coy. 28th Bn., Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan
Regiment)
who died age 20
on 07 November 1917
Son of Samuel and Ida Belle McKibben, of Model Farm,
Saskatchewan. Born Perham, Otter Tall County, Minnesota, U.S.A.
Remembered with honour
NINE ELMS BRITISH CEMETERY
Commemorated in perpetuity by
the Commonwealth War Graves Commission

Dead Man's Penny of
# 781446 Pte. Robert Roy McKibben
In 1918 it was decided to recognize
the valour of each solidier killed during the
war. One million large bronze medallions and
a Letter of Condolence from His Majesty the
King were sent to families throughout
the Empire.
The images are based on the mythical tragic
love story of Pyrmus and Thisbe. The image
is that of Thisbe, holding Neptune’s Trident
in one hand, and a Laurel Wreath in the
other and a Lion walks beside Thisbe.
The Soldier’s name was inscribed on the
medallion. No rank was included as everyone
was equal in death.
In typical soldier’s fashion for creating
Names for things the medallion soon came
to be known as the Dead Man’s penny.

Air force history was made on 6 August 2003 when 15 Wing Moose Jaw became the first active airbase in Canada to be dedicated to the memory of Air Vice-Marshal Clifford Mackay "Black Mike" McEwen, a Moose Jaw native whose service to our nation as a member of the air force spanned both world wars and was one of the founding members of Canada's air force, during a special ceremony held on the 35th anniversary of his death. Air Vice-Marshal McEwen's three daughters, accompanied by Colonel Alain Boyer, Commanding Officer of CFB Moose Jaw, unveiled a ceremonial wall at the main gate inscribed with the name of their father. Numerous veterans, personnel from the Wing, local and provincial dignitaries, as well as members of the general public attended the dedication ceremony. The ceremony was part of 15 Wing's "Saskatchewan Remembers" program. Headed by Master Corporal Jeff Noel, the 15 Wing Heritage Officer, the program was implemented to preserve for current and future generations the major contributions made by Saskatchewan airmen and airwomen to the creation and perpetuation of Canada's air force.
