In 1832 Jesse Lloyd, a Quaker who had come from Pennsylvania to Upper Canada about 1812, purchased 24 ha of land in this vicinity. During the following years he sold portions of his property to incoming settlers. The erection of a grist-mill, sawmill and woolen mill, two tanneries, stores and a number of pioneer industries hastened Lloydtown's growth. By 1851 the community contained a post-office and two churches and had a population of about 350 persons. Jesse Lloyd, the founder of the village, had played a significant role in the rebellion of 1837. He raised and trained a local force, but following MacKenzie's defeat Lloyd was forced to flee to the United States where he died in exile.

In 2004, the Sutton Royal Canadian Legion created a mural to respect Veterans and different sections of the military. They commissioned a new mural in 2019.

Mrs. Anne Wilson from Keswick uncovered a photograph of her son, Warrant Officer Robert Wilson, killed in action in Afghanistan in 2008. Mrs. Bulmer unveiled a photograph of her late husband, Major Max Bulmer, who served as a minister to Canadian Forces in Europe after the Second World War. Poppies grace the bottom of the mural.

The Keswick cenotaph was relocated in 2017 from its former site at the intersection of Church Street and The Queensway, to its current site in front of the Stephen Leacock Theatre on Glendolyn Avenue.

Walter Mackey and Seargent at Arms Rod Beswick of Royal Canadian Legion 356 Sutton suggested the relocation due to a number of issues, including its limited size, sloped landscape and out-of-the-way location that made it almost unnoticeable as part of the landscape.

Council approved a budget of $155,000 in 2018 and fast-tracked the project to accommodate services in 2018 that marked the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.  A new permanent base was installed for the cenotaph, which was refurbished and carries two new inscriptions to its dedications to those who have served, including the First and Second World Wars, Korean War, Afghanistan, and peacekeeping.
