BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE

48TH HIGHLANDERS
OF
CANADA

Their name liveth forevermore- Book of Remembrance 48th Highlanders - inscribed upon these pages are the names of those men of the 48th Highlanders of Canada who in the Great Wars gave their lives that those they left behind might be spared the ills which they themselves endured. Their comrades have placed this memorial beside The Lord's Table in the trust that they, their wounds all healed, their sufferings overpast, may live forever in the light of His Kingdom Who gave His life a ransom for many.

The 48th Highlanders of Canada Book of Remembrance is located in the abutment on the right of the World Wars Communion Table. It contains 25 pages listing 1,818 names and ranks of those who died in the First and Second World Wars. The book has beautiful handwriting in block script. In the abutment on the left of the table is the title page and dedication of the book, all engrossed on parchment within an artistic coloured border of flowers and symbols.

St. Andrew’s Church has been the Regimental Church of the 48th Highlanders of Canada since their founding in 1891 when the church, as one of the several Scottish societies in Toronto, petitioned the government to be allowed to have a regiment that reflected their Scottish Heritage. Their first Commanding Officer, John Davidson was Chair of the St. Andrew’s church board of management. From their founding up until the 1970s, the minister of the church was the padre of the regiment.

Chalmers Presbyterian Church dedicated this memorial plaque to those from its Sunday School who died because of their service in the First World War. This wooden plaque takes the form of a shield and has thirty maple leaves each with the name of a man who died. Plaques like this were part of the Peace Thank-offering and Forward Movement with which the Presbyterian Church marked the end of the war.

The church sanctuary at 1266 Dundas Street W was destroyed by fire in 1945 and was rebuilt. In 1978, the congregation merged with St. Paul's Dovercourt Presbyterian Church and the church on Dundas Street was demolished in the 1980s.

MacPherson United Church was established in 1925 and was renamed Dentonia Park United Church in 1929. The congregation sold its building in 2010 and it was torn down and replaced by housing. In 2011, the congregation began worshipping as an independent congregation in the Hope United Church building.
