It was designed by Alexander Scott Carter for George and Moorhouse, the local architects of the Chapel. The material used was Indiana limestone and the memorial measures approximately 15 feet by 8 feet. The three roundels at the bottom represent the army, the navy and the air force. The memorial was dedicated on November 13, 1960.

Names on the memorial that did not enlist or serve with Canadian Forces:
William George Henry Bates, Captain, Leinster Regiment
William Anderson Henderson, Captain, Royal Army Medical Corps
Thomas Pattison Camelon, Major U.S. Med. Corps
Cleveland Keyes, Major, Royal Field Artillery
Henry Keble Merritt, Major, American Expeditionary Force
Ronald E. MacKenzie Richards, Private, London Scottish
Osmund Bartle Wordsworth, Second Lieutenant, Imperial Machine Gun Corps
Martin Cortlandt de Budé Young, Second Lieutenant, King’s Own Scottish Borderers

Ronald MacKenzie Richards was the first student of the University to fall in the war. When the war was declared he was at home in England and enlisted in the London Scottish. He took part in the first battle of Ypres and was killed a few days later. (Source: University of Toronto Roll of Service 1914-1918).

The Soldiers' Tower stands 143 feet tall and is a memorial to the 628 members of the University of Toronto who gave their lives while on active service in the First World War. The Tower began construction in 1919 and was designed by Sproatt & Rolph Architects. Funded through donations raised by the University’s Alumni Association and benefactor Vincent Massey, the Tower was completed in 1924. It is a solid stone masonry structure designed in the Late Gothic Revival style.

The initial cost of the Tower and memorial screen, the clock and the carillon was $252,500. The interest on the surplus is still in use today for War Memorial Scholarships and for Tower expenses.

It includes: carillon of 51 Bells, each one a memorial; military museum in the Memorial Room; Memorial Screen listing members of the university killed in the First World War; Memorial Arch listing members of the university killed in the Second World War; memorial books for the First and Second World Wars; eight stained glass windows and Memorial Window

This memorial is dedicated to members of the University of Toronto who served in the First and Second World Wars. It was erected by the Soldiers' Tower Committee, University of Toronto Alumni Association and dedicated November 6, 1995. The stained glass window has 12 large panels with original crests of Canada and the University of Toronto. The Memorial Window was designed and installed by Russell Goodman OC, Christopher Goodman, and Angela Zissoff, all working for the Russell C. Goodman Stained Glass Studios.

The four top panels represent peace - the torch, moon, and dove with olive branch. Depicted in the four central panels - "In Flander’s Fields", poppies and crosses. The four lower panels represent nursing and the three forces on guard for Canada.

Symbolism in the Memorial Window

At the top of the Memorial Window, the original Coat of Arms of Canada (left) and the original Coat of Arms of the University of Toronto rest above a field of blue, representing the heavens. Blue, the colour of the clear sky and of pure water, is a symbol of truth. The sun, moon and stars of the four upper panels represent creation, while the dove - a symbol for the Holy Spirit - stands for peace and purity. Recalling the story of the Flood, when Noah sent a dove out from the Ark, it returned bearing an olive branch to show that God had made peace with man. The clouds in the heavens are the natural veil of the blue sky and are, therefore, used as the symbol of the unseen God.

In the centre of the four panels is a maple leaf, stylized after the Canadian flag. Dawn, or the rising sun, is the symbol of the Blood of Christ. Through the shedding of His Blood, the darkness of sin was overcome, and the dawn of eternal salvation made the world light. The sun and the light that radiates from it represent God. In the centre, the Victory Torch is used as a symbol for the active attainment of peace. The perspective convergence of the crosses into the Torch represents the collective sacrifice and unity of the Armed Forces to achieve victory. The poppies at the foot of the crosses invoke remembrance. Meadowlarks, which fly high and sing only when in flight toward heaven, represent the souls of the dead.

The images of the four lower panels depict the men and women of the services. The sailor, taking a sextant reading, represents the need for self-appraisal in changing times; the soldier, doing reconnaissance, represents the need for vigilance and foresight; the airman, preparing to take off, represents the need for dedication and trust of others to accomplish common goals. In the nurse we see compassion and concern for all humanity - a consciousness of which we must never lose sight.
From: Stained Glass, Spring 1996.

The World Wars Communion Table was dedicated on November 11, 1934, by the minister of St. Andrew's and chaplain of the 48th Highlanders of Canada, the Reverend Stuart C. Parker, D.D. The table was gifted by the sergeants to the church in memory of their comrades who fell in the First World War and now stands as a memorial to those who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars.

The oak table was created by Dr. John A. Pearson, a member of St. Andrew's Church. The symbols of Bread and Wine are carved below the top to the table above the panels. The Gothic tracery of the panels are intertwined with maple leaves, roses, thistles, shamrocks, acorns and fleur-de-lis. A carving of the heraldic figure of St. Andrew is on the front panel and the Burning Bush with the legend "Nec Tamen Consumebatur" is on the back panel. The interior of the table is ventilated through small decorative openings in the tracery.

The abutments at each end are narrower than the table and about six inches lower; each has a removable oak top. Below the tops are plates of glass set in a hinged frame which can be opened and closed, and also locked to safeguard the records within. Hidden in each is an electric light which can be turned on or off by a switch on the Chancel wall.

The 48th Highlanders of Canada Book of Remembrance is located in the abutment on the right and its title page and dedication is in the abutment on the left. The symbols of the Armour of God are carved on the sides of both abutments - The Girdle of Truth The Breastplate' of Righteousness, The Sandals of Peace, The Shield of Faith, The Helmet of Salvation and The Sword of The Spirit. Thus there is in this shrine of Christian Faith a beautiful and useful memorial in the place of sacrifice and communion with God.

St. Andrew’s Church has been the Regimental Church of the 48th Highlanders of Canada since their founding in 1891 when the church, as one of the several Scottish societies in Toronto, petitioned the government to be allowed to have a regiment that reflected their Scottish Heritage. Their first Commanding Officer, John Davidson was Chair of the St. Andrew’s church board of management. From their founding up until the 1970s, the minister of the church was the padre of the regiment.

The Highlanders Window is dedicated to the 48th Highlanders of Canada who were killed in the First World War. It was designed by Peter Haworth and erected by Laura Christie Clark on November 11, 1937. Laura donated the window out of her admiration for the regiment. Sergeant George Elms posed for the artist, not knowing that his son and grandson would also serve in the 48th Highlanders of Canada.

The window depicts a Highlander in full dress scarlet, standing with reversed arms, hands clasped on the butt of the rifle, head bowed – an eloquent symbol of mourning and respect. At each side of him, of similar dimensions but in perspective behind, are two great soldiers of The Old Testament, Joshua and David the King, armed as in the days when they too, fought and suffered and grieved for fallen comrades.

In 1891, a group of men gathered in Toronto intent on forming the city's first Highland regiment. The regiment was designated by the Militia Department with the number "48" and the word "Highlanders" and shortly thereafter Lieutenant-Colonel John Irvine Davidson assumed command of the newly constituted 48th Highlanders of Canada.

The Regiment was gazetted on October 16, 1891, and began to drill at Upper Canada College. It first marched out on the 21 April, 1892, to be greeted by crowds of cheering Torontonians. On the Queen's Birthday that year, the Regiment was presented with its first set of colours by His Excellency Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada.

The 15th Battalion (48th Highlanders of Canada) went overseas with the first Canadian contingent in October 1914 equipped in uniforms paid for by the Regiment. The 48th recruited three battalions, the 15th and two reinforcement battalions, 92nd and 134th. Facing the first gas attack of the war at the Second Battle of Ypres on 24 April 1915, the 48th were ordered to stand to the end. They did, losing 664 Highlanders, killed, wounded or prisoners of war. The 15th Battalion continued to the war’s end in battles including the Somme, Passchendaele and Vimy Ridge, earning 21 Battle Honours. 1,625 Highlanders were killed in action.
