The Air Force Window is the fourth window in the Soldiers' Tower Staircase of Honour. It depicts ground crew, including an Indigenous member, servicing an aircraft. The contributions of Indigenous peoples were significant in both world wars.

The Staircase of Honour features a series of eight stained glass windows honouring the Canadian Armed Forces in action during wartime. The windows were officially dedicated on May 26, 2005, by the Honourable James K. Bartleman, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.

The three stained glass windows along the first flight of stairs, on the north wall, commemorate women’s service in the Second World War: Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRCNS), commonly known as Wrens, Canadian Women's Army Corps, and the Royal Canadian Air Force (Women's Division).

Turning and mounting the next flight, one passes three larger windows on the south wall honouring all those who served in the Armed Forces during both World Wars: Air Force, Navy, and Vimy Ridge. Ascending the third and final flight of stairs, two small windows are on the north wall: Canadian Merchant Navy and the Auxiliary Services of The Royal Canadian Legion, Canadian Red Cross, Knights of Columbus, Salvation Army and the Young Men’s Christian Association.

All eight windows in the Staircase of Honour were designed and installed by the Goodman Zissoff Stained Glass Studio of Kelowna, British Columbia — formerly the Russell C. Goodman Stained Glass Studios of Parry Sound, Ontario, which created the Memorial Window in the Memorial Room of the Tower.

George Stephen was a former teacher of Automotive Mechanics at Danforth Tech. George was born in Scotland and enlisted for three wars. He enlisted in the Boer War, but was found to be underage and sent back home to Scotland. When his family came to Canada, he enlisted with the 48th Highlanders, serving in both the First and Second World Wars. George was the Regimental Sergeant-Major of the 48th Highlanders from 1948 to 1951.

During the First World War, George served in the UK, France and Belgium. He was wounded at St. Julian in April 1915 and again at Vimy Ridge in April 1917. During the Second World War, George served in the UK, Sicily and Italy. Danforth’s archives have about 10 pieces of correspondence that he had sent to the school during the Second World War. He often wrote in green ink and signed his letters as Steve.

The painting is by Fred Savard, a former student at Danforth Tech who later taught Art at Danforth. Fred was an Art student at the school during 1927 to 1928 when the school was named Riverdale Technical School. Fred’s Permanent War Record form that is held in Danforth’s War Memorial Library indicates that he enlisted with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada on August 30, 1942. He was an Infantryman until he was seconded by either the Intelligence Unit or Headquarters of the regiment where his artistic ability was useful in interpreting maps and topography. When he was able, Fred sketched and painted scenes from the battlefield and a major portion of his wartime artwork is displayed by his former regiment in a room named after him at the John W. Foote, V.C. Armouries in Hamilton, Ontario. One of his more famous paintings is titled “Brewed Up” that depicts a shattered Sherman tank after it had caught fire and exploded.

The oil on canvas portrait of George Stephen was painted circa 1950 and signed and dated by the artist in 1953. The canvas is located in the hallway to the War Memorial Library.

The two bronze Second World War Plaques were designed by Danforth Art Teacher, Mr. Cyril J. Travers. A total of 241 names of former Danforth students and staff who died or were killed while on active service are listed on the plaques. They are located in the War Memorial Library.

Research has discovered an additional 21 people whose names need to be commemorated in a similar manner.

The Active Service Panels are situated outside the entrance to the War Memorial Library and contain the names of 2,231 students, teachers and other staff who enlisted for active duty during the Second World War. Approximately 21 of these names appear more than once. For instance, the names of 13 teachers appear on more than one panel and six of the female students who were married during the war have their names listed with both their single and married surnames. Ongoing research being done by the school’s current alumni group, the Danforth Tech Society, has revealed approximately another 150 names that are missing from the Active Service Panels.

The Active Service Panels were designed by Group of Seven artist, A.J. Casson and his name appears at the bottom of each panel. All four panels were prepared by Danforth Tech’s Director of Art, Mr. Donald L. Howchin. The names were hand-lettered in a calligraphic form by Mr. Howchin. A somewhat different lettering style appears at the end of some alphabetic groups - these names were added prior to Danforth Tech’s 75th Anniversary that was celebrated in May 1998.
