In the early 1980s, a coalition of Peace activists petitioned the then-Mayor Art Eggleton to erect a Peace Garden in Nathan Phillips Square at City Hall. The two angled, stepped planting planes echo the form of two cupped hands – framing a space focused on the project of peace. It reinstates the original and restored Peace Pavilion and its iconography, with a new flame and water cauldron set within a reflecting pool. The bronze cauldron symbolically contains the water brought from Nagasaki, with an eternal flame – kindled in Hiroshima – supporting the open corner of the Pavilion.
The pavilion is reached via a bridge made with granite from the original garden. The Garden is open to the main Square to the north and east, maintaining the visual connection between the Eternal Flame and the Mayor’s office. Large engraved concrete thresholds with stainless steel letters at the north and south announce the name of the garden, and a bridge crosses between the ginkgos.
The architecture was a joint venture of Plant Architects Inc and Perkins + Will Architects, with the modernist masterwork by Finnish architect Viljo Revell.
The retired Air Forces colours were entrusted to the Toronto Maple Leafs' Air Canada Centre.
Arthur Norman Martin designed the Second World War Memorial on the grand staircase leading from the Lobby of Old City Hall in Sept. 1947. The stained-glass window designed by Robert McCausland is located on the staircase, facing the entranceway. The window features the city’s coat-of-arms, the panels below it illustrating the union of commerce and industry.
The Ontario sculptor Frances Loring was commissioned to produce a Great War memorial for the Law Society of Upper Canada, in Toronto. Loring began by working on a clay model, which the committee then reviewed and, after suggesting a few modifications, approved before she made a full?sized plaster cast that would be used by the eventual marble carvers to create an exact copy with the help of calipers and precise measurements. The cast was shipped to Italy, and Loring herself went to Carrara after it to select the marble to be used for the sculpture, and to supervise its carving. The memorial lists 115 lawyers and law students who died in the war.
The Lieutenant Dermont Alan Harris Plaque was unveiled on May 3, 1920. Maple leaves are prominently etched in the relief work, while the inscription 'Faithful Unto Death' affirms Harris as a soldier of Christ. Lieutenant Harris was killed in action on August 9, 1918, while serving with the 4th Battalion.
The Order Street Public School war memorial is a bronze plaque 1939-45 in honoured memory of the boys of Orde Street Public School.
Saint Peter Anglican Church history
In memory of Lt Dermot Alan Harris
The church has a rich history of Toronto soldier's and veterans. There are plaques honouring parishioner soldiers who were killed in action during the Great War.
The colours (flags) were retired at the Canadian Forces Appreciation Night in February 2018. The colours will be stored in a display case at gate 6 visible from the interior or exterior of Maple Leaf Gardens. The Colours honour the Maple Leafs military history. Wing Commander William George Baker, World War I ace, served as President of the Maple Leaf Club.
