Tulip

Each spring, in Ottawa, Canada’s capital, millions of multi-coloured tulips burst into bloom. These tulips are symbols of the friendship that blossomed between the people of Canada and the Netherlands during the Second World War. During the war, Canada provided a safe haven for the Dutch Royal Family, helped liberate so many Dutch people during the war. Following the war, Princess Juliana of Holland presented Canada with 100,000 tulip bulbs to thank Canada for being so kind. Canada continues to receive a gift of 20,000 bulbs from Holland each year.

The flowers are also a beautiful display of colour, and to celebrate winter’s end in Canada, the Canadian Tulip Festival is celebrated each spring in Ottawa.

Poppy

The red poppy is a symbol of remembrance. During the First World War, the poppy was the only flower that could grow in the ruined fields of France and Belgium. It self-seeded and so could continue growing year after year. Sometimes it was the only spot of colour the soldiers saw as the trees and grass were replaced by the shattered trunks and mud of war.

We wear poppies on November 11th in memory of the Canadian men and women who served and died for peace and freedom all over the world, and to publicly show our respect for them.

Dickin Medal

The Dickin Medal is the highest honour given to animals for brave and courageous acts.

It is a large bronze medallion, that bears the words: “For Gallantry” and “We Also Serve” within a laurel wreath.

The stripped ribbon has three colours:

  • green (representing water and symbolizing the navy)
  • dark brown (representing earth and symbolizing the army)
  • pale blue (representing air and symbolizing the air force)

The following animals have received the Dickin Medal to date: 32 pigeons; 24 dogs; 3 horses; and 1 cat.

Remembrance Club House

The members of the Remembrance Club House (Gandy, Squeaker, Win, Simone, Ellie, and Bonfire Jr.) have ancestors who were pretty amazing animal heroes and who worked to help humans in times of war and during peace support missions.

Every Remembrance Day (November 11th), it is important to remember the men and women who served and died in war and peace support missions. It is also nice to remember the brave efforts of the animals that served and helped these people.

Peacekeeping Monument

The Peacekeeping Monument in Ottawa is the first monument in the world dedicated to peacekeeping.

Wreath

We place wreaths on memorials across Canada to show our thanks to Veterans.
