He was baptized Joseph-Herménégilde Linteau, son of Joseph Linteau and Adélaïde Faveur (who remarried in 1910 with Jean Cayer). Upon enlistment, he stated that he was born on August 29, 1895, and signed his name as Jos. Lanctôt.

Enlisted in the 57th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he embarked from Montreal, Quebec, on June 16, 1915, bound for Great Britain, and disembarked at Plymouth, England, on the 28th. On July 31, he was assigned to the 23rd Reserve Battalion at Shorncliffe. On November 1, 1915, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion. On the 2nd, he crossed the English Channel and landed at Rouelles, in Normandy, France. He joined his new unit on the front lines on the 8th. On October 4, 1916, he went missing in action during the Battle of Courcelette, on the Somme, while attempting to capture the Regina Trench. On July 7, 1917, it was confirmed that he was presumed killed in action on October 4, 1916. His body was never found.
