Son of Joseph Couillard and Aurore Bellavance (deceased in 1912). His father remarried to Xantine Dumas in Le Bic in 1912 and resided in Amqui.

When he arrived in France, Ernest first served 13 months with 22nd Battalion and, on 13 May 1918, he was transferred to an elite formation, the Machine Gun Corps. On 2 October, he was severely wounded from shrapnel below the heart and he was evacuated to No. 2 Casualty clearing station in Anvin, North-West of Arras. He died two days later.

BUCQUOY ROAD CEMETERY is situated on the D919 heading south from Arras to Ayette. The Cemetery is on the right hand side of the road, 9 kilometres from Arras, just before a crossroads with the D36 between Ficheux and Boisleux-au-Mont.
