Son of Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Cardinal and Amanda Savard, of Montréal, Québec. He stated being born in 1897 when he enlisted. During the First World War, Jean Baptiste enlisted as John Baptiste Cardinal on 27 April 1917 with the 2nd Battalion Depot of the 2nd Quebec Regiment, regimental number 526958. He was transferred to the 10th Reserve Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was discharged from the army for medical reasons. On the same day, 8 January 1918, he re-enlisted, regimental number 3155180, at the same place. He embarked for England, arriving on 4 March 1918. He was first transferred to the 10th Reserve Battalion and on 2 April to the 20th Reserve Battalion. He was repatriated to Canada on 30 April and demobilised on 15 July 1918 without ever having seen action.
Enlisted in the 150th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, he was posted to the 69th Reserve Battalion on 6 April 1916. He embarked for England, arriving in Liverpool on 27 April. He was transfered to the 22nd Battalion at Camp Dibgate on 27 August. Arriving in France as reinforcement for the 22nd Battalion, he rejoined the unit on 20 September 1916 and was killed in action two weeks later in the capture of Regina Trench.

REGINA TRENCH CEMETERY Somme, France
Courcelette is a village about 8 kilometres north-east of Albert (next to the main road D929 Albert-Bapaume). The REGINA TRENCH CEMETERY lies about 1.5 kilometres north-west of the village.
The REGINA TRENCH CEMETERY (signposted in the centre of Courcelette) is 1.5 kilometres down a single track lane (suitable for cars).
